Primary Level Mathematics

MATHEMATICS

Mathematical understanding influences decision making in all areas of life – private, social and civil. The Mathematics curriculum provides a framework to enable pupils to develop mathematical knowledge and skills, and an understanding of how to use them appropriately in real life situations. The overarching concepts of thinking skills and problem solving should underpin teaching and learning in five main topics:

  • Numbers and the number system
  • Calculation
  • Measurement
  • Shape and space
  • Data handling

Intermath

The core teaching tool for Mathematics in the primary classes are the Intermath materials. Intermath has been developed specifically for European Schools and is available in all the section languages. The books cover the main teaching objectives for each year group. Additionally, teachers use a wide variety of teaching methods and learning approaches to ensure successful learning for all pupils. The development of logical thinking and problem solving is key in the process.

Matific

Furthermore, Maths teachers may supplement their teaching with the use of Matific. Matific is a collection of online Mathematics activities that teach students problem solving and critical thinking through discovery. It has proven to be a fun way for students to further improve mathematical skills they have learned in class.
