On Tuesday, 15th October, the European School Ljubljana took part in the Bee Wild conservation project, whose main goal is environmental protection and the preservation of bees. Bees play a very important role in maintaining ecological balance and biodiversity in nature. This is also one of the reasons why the Bee Wild project closely connects us with the Erasmus Hapi project, in which the European School Ljubljana is involved. The Bee Wild project was initiated by our Austrian partners from the Frutura organisation, under the leadership of Mr. Manfred Hohensinner, who has been committed to organic fruit and vegetable production for many years. The key mission of the Bee Wild project is to encourage the construction of bee hotels and other insect habitats, and the planting of seeds essential for the biodiversity of our environment. The students of the European School Ljubljana participated in the creation of a bee hotel in the shape of the European School Ljubljana logo and in the planting of seeds cultivated from apple pips, thereby enabling the continued reproduction of bees. The event was supported by various partners of the Bee Wild project, including Austrian Ambassador Mrs. Elisabeth Ellison-Kramer, Bee Wild project biologist Mrs. Katrin Grobbauer, Mr. Christian Buchmann, a member of the Austrian Federal Council, and Mr. Thomas Schmickl, a bee scientist from the Karl Franzens University in Graz. The event's honorary guests were Bee Wild project ambassador Mrs. Elizabeth Görgl, a former Austrian skiing champion, and Mrs. Maša Derganc, an actress from the Slovenian National Theatre Drama Ljubljana. Together with nursery, primary, and secondary school students, they built small bee houses, planted seeds, and helped with the construction of the bee hotel. The students also learned a great deal about bees and biodiversity from beekeeper Mrs. Nika Pengal and biology teacher Mrs. Jerca Starc. The project was further supported by the participation of Mrs. Nives Počkar, Director of the Ljubljana School Centre, who facilitated the use of the green space that now hosts the bee hotel, Mrs. Špela Peklar, Principal of the European School Ljubljana, Mrs. Jerneja Jug Jerše, Head of the European Commission Representation in Slovenia, Mrs. Maša Žagar, Director-General of the Directorate for Agriculture, and Mrs. Anita Tušar, Head of the European Parliament Liaison Office in Slovenia. We are very proud to be the first European School to have had the opportunity to become part of such a well-designed sustainable project.
